Importing IT and security equipment into India: the basics

KINNEX Team5 min read

If a product is not available through local distribution, it can still be brought in, through the right channel. This article is general orientation, not legal advice.

Who imports

Goods are imported by a registered importer holding the required registrations. Buyers who bring goods in without proper documentation risk delays, penalties and unsupported equipment.

Approvals that can apply

  • BIS registration for notified electronics categories.
  • WPC equipment type approval for products using certain radio frequencies, such as some Wi-Fi and wireless devices.
  • TEC mandatory testing and certification for specified telecom equipment.
  • Other product-specific rules for batteries, power adapters and similar items.

Which approvals apply depends on the product, so check before ordering, not after the shipment arrives.

What affects time and cost

Customs duty and tax classification, freight mode, port clearance, approvals, documentation accuracy and payment terms. Lead times for specialised equipment can run to many weeks.

Protecting yourself

  • Confirm the model is approved for use in India.
  • Check that firmware, support and warranty are valid for the Indian region.
  • Keep invoices and import documents with the asset register.
  • Prefer suppliers who explain the route and the paperwork clearly.

Alternatives

Sometimes an equivalent product is already stocked locally and meets the need faster. A good supplier will compare both.
