Genuine, grey-market and counterfeit: how to buy IT hardware safely

Two quotes for the same switch can differ widely. Sometimes the cheaper one is genuinely better value. Sometimes it is a different product in the same box.

The categories

  • Genuine, local channel stock: supplied through the manufacturer’s Indian distribution, with local warranty.
  • Parallel or grey imports: genuine goods brought in outside the official channel. They may lack local warranty or support entitlements.
  • Refurbished: used goods restored and resold, which can be fine if described honestly and warrantied.
  • Counterfeit: forged labels, cloned firmware or recycled parts. Dangerous for networks, because they can fail or carry hidden risk.

What to check

  • Serial numbers against the manufacturer’s warranty and entitlement lookup.
  • Sealed packaging, holograms and labelling consistent with genuine goods.
  • Whether support contracts and firmware updates are available for the exact unit.
  • Importer details and customs documentation for imported goods.
  • Required approvals for products such as wireless equipment and telecom gear.

Why it matters

A switch that cannot be updated cannot be secured. A firewall without support leaves you alone when it matters. Savings at purchase turn into costs later.

A sound process

Specify the exact part numbers, ask for the sourcing route, verify on delivery, record serials against the asset register and keep invoices for warranty claims.

Importing legitimately

Products can be brought in through registered importers with proper documentation and approvals. We source from the manufacturer channel, distribution or registered importers as the product requires, and tell you which route applies.
