Redesigning a website without losing search traffic
KINNEX Team5 min read
New designs often arrive with lower search traffic. That is avoidable.
Before you change anything
Record what exists: every URL, its traffic, its links and the keywords it ranks for. This is your baseline and your map for redirects.
Keep what works
Pages that rank well should keep their content, headings and intent, even if the layout changes. Removing text to make a page look cleaner can remove the reason it ranks.
Redirect every old URL
Map each old address to its closest new page with a permanent redirect. Test them in bulk. Broken links and long redirect chains lose ranking and visitors.
Technical foundations
- Fast loading and good Core Web Vitals.
- Mobile-first design.
- Clean titles, descriptions and headings.
- Structured data where relevant.
- An updated sitemap and robots rules.
- Canonical tags and no accidental noindex.
Launch carefully
Use a staging site, review it with a crawler, and launch at a quiet time. Submit the new sitemap and watch search console for errors in the first weeks.
After launch
Compare traffic and rankings with the baseline. Fix lost pages quickly. Improvements often follow once the new site is faster and clearer.
Beyond SEO
Check forms, analytics, tracking, accessibility and integrations before you declare it finished.
