Staff augmentation or project outsourcing: which model fits?
KINNEX Team5 min read
Both models bring in outside capability. They differ in who manages the work and who carries the risk.
Staff augmentation
Individual engineers join your team for an agreed period. You direct their daily work, and they follow your process and tools. Best when you already have product leadership, a clear backlog and need more hands or a specific skill.
Advantages: flexibility, quick start, control. Risks: management load stays with you, and quality depends on your processes.
Project outsourcing
A provider takes a defined scope and delivers it with its own team and process, for a fixed price or a managed budget. Best when requirements are clear and you want an outcome rather than people.
Advantages: predictable scope and cost, less day-to-day management. Risks: change requests, knowledge sitting with the provider, and lock-in if documentation is poor.
Dedicated team
A middle path: a stable team works only on your product, with the provider handling hiring, replacement and management. You steer priorities.
How to choose
- Do you have technical leadership to direct work?
- Is the scope clear and stable?
- How long is the need?
- How important is keeping knowledge in-house?
Making either work
Define goals, hand over documentation and code ownership, set communication rhythms, review work regularly, and plan the knowledge transfer from the start.
