NVR, VMS or cloud video: which recording approach fits your site

Cameras capture; something else records, stores and lets people search. The choice affects cost, scale and flexibility for years.
NVR appliances
A network video recorder is a purpose-built box with storage and software. Simple to install, easy to run, and well suited to small and medium sites. The trade-off is limited scaling and often a preference for the same maker’s cameras.
VMS on servers
Video management software runs on standard servers and storage. It scales to hundreds of cameras across many sites, supports many camera brands and adds features such as maps, analytics, access-control integration and central monitoring. It needs more design and maintenance.
Cloud video
Cameras or a small local gateway send video to cloud storage. Good for many small sites with no IT staff, remote viewing and automatic updates. Costs run monthly, bandwidth must be planned, and you depend on a subscription.
Hybrid
Record locally for speed and resilience, and send events or selected clips to the cloud for backup and remote access. Many multi-site operators land here.
How to decide
- How many cameras and sites now, and in three years?
- Do you need integration with access control, alarms or analytics?
- Who will maintain the system?
- Is open-standard camera support (ONVIF) important to you?
- What are your retention and privacy obligations?
Whichever you choose, insist on open standards and exportable footage, so a future change of system is possible.
