ANPR for gates and car parks: placement, lighting and accuracy

KINNEX Team4 min read

Automatic number-plate recognition reads plates and acts on them: opening a barrier, logging entry, raising an alert.

Design for the capture zone

Place the camera so the plate is in focus, large enough in the frame and at a modest angle, usually within about thirty degrees horizontally and vertically. One camera per lane.

Speed and shutter

Fast-moving vehicles need fast shutter speeds. Slow the traffic with speed humps or a barrier.

Light

Infrared illumination helps at night. Avoid headlight glare by angling the camera, and use a shaded housing.

Plates

Indian plates vary in format, font and colour. Test with real local plates. Dirty, damaged or non-standard plates reduce accuracy.

Integration

Link to a database of allowed and denied vehicles, to boom barriers and to visitor management. Keep a log with images.

Data protection

Plates and images are personal data. Set retention periods, limit access and post notices.

Test

Run a trial week. Measure the read rate and fix placement before relying on it.
